Do you know the meaning of fallow?

 

This concept supposes the rest between sowings and crops, agricultural process to allow that the qualities of the ground do not wear out.

 

The rest periods are usually every two or three years, in this way the land recovers its nutrients and in the next planting it will give the best fruits.

 

It is also possible to organize a three-year system of crops in the field, in this way a winter crop is sown during the first part of the year, another of spring in the second part and at the end of the year of fallow.

In the practice of the uncultivated period, the crops are rotated so as not to wear out the excess soil, which is the basis for achieving more efficient agricultural production.

 

TYPES OF BARBECTIONS:

 

  • Short and long fallow: management of time in weed control
  • There are two types of fallow:
    Fallow land, ground in which the weeds are removed. Within this type of fallow we find the chemical fallow in which the weeds or weeds are eliminated by herbicides, and the mechanical fallow is treated with tools that accelerate the decomposition process when burying the herbs, the latter presents more effectiveness.

 

If we talk about year and time fallow, we refer to the type of fallow that allows the land to rest for a year;

 

In the fallow to the third, two years of rest for each of cultivation are considered.

In both moments it is important to carry out a correct control of the weeds, since they would generate losses and difficulties when establishing the new crop.

In addition to the time in which the land is left to rest, the way in which the fallow is applied is also very important.

 

The herbaceous fallow consists of leaving the land completely, not having a maintenance in any way while letting rest (stubble);

 

In the cultivated fallow the ground is maintained during the rest period.

 

We can also speak of seed fallow, if something is sown during the process (which can include legume species such as chickpeas or lentils, these help enrich the soil), or white fallow, if nothing is sown.

 

Currently, in most agro-industrial farms, fallow is not practiced, since the objective is to obtain profits on a constant basis, regardless of the destruction of the soil, except extensive agriculture, which usually practices the uncultivated period together with the systems of crop rotation.

 

How to achieve an efficient agricultural production?

In addition to practicing the fallow technique, other processes must also be applied, such as conserving soil moisture, choosing the appropriate herbicides to apply and monitoring.

  • Conserve moisture: fundamental development for the soil. To conserve the humidity in the first centimeters of the ground is very important since it is where the seed will be located.
  • If an appropriate control is carried out, between 50 and 60 millimeters of water can be conserved.
  • Choice of herbicides: we must take into account the climatic conditions, the distribution, abundance and composition of the weeds that grow, in addition to the cycle of their growth and aggressiveness.
  • Monitoring: it is essential to keep track of the crops and their growth on the ground, establishing and eliminating the weeds that develop. Insufficient monitoring means that the controls are not effective.
