The pipes recommended for an irrigation system are made with Polyethylene (PE), a thermoplastic material that can change shape depending on the temperature and pressure it is subjected to.

Pipes made with virgin PE rather than recycled PE are of a better quality, since they provide us with a healthy guarantee that recylced materials cannot give us, so they can be used to transport drinking water for human consumption.

Types of polyethylene pipes:

There are various types of polyethylene (PE) pipes, including those of a “Medium Density” (PE40) and those of a “High Density” (PE100).

Medium density
Medium density pipes are softer and more flexible, enabling them to bend and adapt better to any unevenness of the ground. Their flexibility doesn’t just make installation easier, by enabling more pronounced bends to be created, they are also more tolerant to being crushed without collapsing. Moreover, they are easier to transport as they weigh less.

High density
High density piples are much more rigid than the ones above, so they don’t adapt as well to any unevenness of the ground. They are generally used as the main pipelines of irrigation systems, from which secondary pipes fork off. These secondary pipes are usually of a much lower density, and are those that “cross” the crop fields, adapting better to the orography of the terrain.
